BOATING ONTARIO MTO SERVICE PLATE ‘HOW TO’
Apr 9, 2019
Boating Ontario recently announced a great win for our industry in how we move new and customer’s boats around the province of Ontario. The new Service Plate is a great solution and Boating Ontario sincerely thanks the MTO and the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario for their support.
The question has come to Boating Ontario, ‘How do we get a plate’?
Here’s what Boating Ontario has determined;
The new plate is the existing plate used in other industries which means the only change at Service Ontario offices is to allow you as a marina or boat dealer, to buy the plate.
Recommendations;
You will require a letter on company letterhead outlining the reasons why you need the plate.
Boating Ontario suggests you print and take a copy of the MTO announcement with you MTO website. They have been advised that the Service Ontario offices have received communications on the regulation change which added use of these plates for boats (and snowmobiles & ATV’s).
Key points to remember
• The plate is only eligible to be used for boat and trailer packages with a combined weight of 2,800 KG maximum
• You still must have your commercial trucks annually inspected and display the yellow sticker
• Talk to your insurance partner to be sure the new plate is covered on your garage policy
• You must carry all documentation – if your business is buying multiple plates we suggest you carry all ownerships in all of your service vehicles.
