Eight Bells – Don Lazareth

Don Lazareth

Mar 14, 2022

Bill Boughen, an early pioneer in the marine business started Niagara Marine in 1945 in St. Catharines, Ontario. By 1955, the business was flourishing, and Bill recruited his nephew, Don Lazareth from a very successful banking career to join the team. There was no looking back as lines like Evinrude, Sheppard, Peterborough, Mason and Grew signed on along with Tee Nee trailers and soon Lawn Boy mowers, Toro and Pioneer saws.

By the 1960’s, Crestliner and Starcraft were added, and the location needed expanding. Adjoining property was acquired and the decision was made in 1973 to sell the business to Don. Positive changes continued after a young Peter Hanna walked in the door and Niagara Marine became the second Doral dealer in Ontario. The relationship was a good one as countless loads of Doral Colts, TRX and Cavaliers went through the door.

By 1977 Don’s son John had joined the team, and Thundercraft was added. At the time to have Thundercraft, and Doral alongside Grew and Chris Craft was rare. Niagara Marine had been an OMC dealer since 1945 and in the early 90’s Yamaha and Mercury were added, another rare combination. Don Lazareth just knew how to make it work.

As Don’s son John and Don’s older daughter Jayne continued to run the business with their incredibly dedicated team, Don slowly backed out and made visits to his new retreat in Ellicottville, New York. John ran the business until late 1999, when an offer was accepted to sell Niagara Marine.

Don was a dedicated member of the OMOA / Boating Ontario, St. Catharines Rowing Club, and Ducks Unlimited for many years and will be sadly missed by many, including one of his best friends and confidents, Jim Heighington at Proctor Marine.

Don passed after a brief illness, with his wife of 68 years Shirley and youngest daughter Tracey at his side.
