EPA plans a ban on methylene chloride

Mar 26, 2024

We have recently learned through Chemical Concepts that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been moving forward with a ban on methylene chloride,  a chemical commonly found in contact cement, adhesives, sealants, etc.

Although this ban will begin to take effect in June, it will be phased in over time and some adhesive manufacturers are already taking proactive measures by adjusting their formulations and/or discontinuing products that many companies rely on for their continued operation. Some products will be discontinued as soon as next month.

If you’re concerned about whether any adhesives that you use contain methylene chloride, fill out our contact form so we can verify and provide you with alternative recommendations if necessary.

In the meantime, consider ordering what you need now (while you can still get it) before you’re caught without product. Since it can take some time to find a suitable alternative we are recommending our customers consider placing an order for a 6-month – 1-year supply in order to avoid possible shutdowns and have plenty of buffer to work out any unforeseen issues with replacement products.

We will continue to monitor the progress of the EPA ban on methylene chloride and it’s impacts and provide you with updates as they become available.

This is going to be a crisis and the industry is not well prepared to deal with the rapid shift in supply chains. Luckily, Chemical Concepts is very familiar with supply chain disruptions and is taking proactive communication with our customers to help them protect themselves and minimize potential negative impacts.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions.

We suggest you take action now as these changes are happening rapidly and those who wait will have fewer options available.

Thank you,
The Team at Chemical Concepts
