What is your company’s history?

You may not think you need to assign someone to be your archivist, but I suggest it’s a good idea. Life is full of unexpected surprises and as an editor, you would be surprised at how many highly placed people have never invested in getting themselves a professional portrait. What if you are unexpectedly presented with an award? What if you decide to buy out your competitor, or maybe donate to a worthy cause? Wouldn’t it be smart to have resources handy to send out a simple press release with a digital photo?

I hate to say this but what if something happens and you are no longer around to speak for yourself? Could anyone else tell your story? On the good side, I bet you have had some sort of success that merits recognition. Did you get a photo? Did anyone record the dates and details of the purchase of a new building, the first truck in the fleet, or the first shop space you ever set up?

Even things that may seem kind of trivial now, could have a bigger place in your future and you can’t roll the tape back to replay those moments in life. You need to grab them as they come along. As you read this edition of Boating Industry Canada News Week Digest on Tuesday October 29th, 2024 (Happy Halloween by the way!) the folks at C.C. Marine Distributors are wrapping up their annual Trade Show that ended last night.

During the opening night dinner, I was invited to make a brief speech about the company and their amazing leader, Charlie Bulmer. They made it easy for me because over the years, Charlie and his team have grabbed the camera and taken a photo of their long-standing customers when they came to the shop, their friends, their accomplishments and other life events.

For those who wanted to know more detail, or who missed the event, Boating Industry Canada News Week Digest has had the opportunity to write about Charlie, (even his father Currey Bulmer at one point) and the history of C.C. Marine Distributors, because they kept photos and news clippings. Now, we can give you a digital link to those stories. They are interesting and enjoyable to read.

Here is the special insert that we published from October 2007:

And here is the link to the C.C. Marine article from BIC 2016:

I hope this gives you some thoughts about your own career and your business. Social media isn’t really all that new. People have been doing it for years and in spite of how many of us feel embarrassed to have our picture taken, others want to see you. Smile!
