EMPLOYEES AND EMPLOYERS MEET HERE!

5 Generations

Apr 24, 2017

Boating Industry Canada News Week presents several great marine industry career opportunities every week, and to browse for opportunities or to post a job is FREE! As a benefit to the industry, we’ve been doing this for many years now and literally dozens of our readers have found great new jobs, and great new employees in the News Week “Marine Industry Careers” forum.

TECHS AND EXECS

The demand is huge for marine technicians at this time of year and considering the sales results from the winter boat shows, as well as the generally strong Canadian economy, we expect that we are in for another strong year. Last year, many dealers set all-time sales records. But, will you be ready with the manpower you need for this summer?

Executives are also urgently needed. Over the year, numerous well-paying corporate jobs with benefits and excellent opportunities for personal growth have also been listed in our News Week “Marine Industry Careers” section.

At the NMMA Canada Recreational Boating Industry Breakfast held during the 2017 Toronto International Boat Show, and, I presented this chart of the Canadian population, charted by year. It points out that we are going to experience big growth in the number of retiring baby-boom generation people, but there will also be a 20% decline in the number of people who are under 20 years of age.

5 Generations

Caption: From age 20 to 60, population by year is around 500k. The shock to our system will come at the old end, as those who are 72 grow from 300,000 to 400,000 (in 4 years) and to 500,000 (in 14 years). At the opposite end, the number of 20 year olds will drop by 20% over the next 5 years. Just as the marine industry boomers want to retire, the population of young people to enter the industry will drop.

Both facts demand a staffing response from our industry – more new products and higher expectations for customer service will come from the affluent retirees who are spending more and more time at the lake, but there’s also a need for higher pay and more clearly defined, long-term career path to attract and hold the young people you will need to run your business in the future.

Here is an example of one of the Marine Industry Careers we have just posted:

OTTAWA (November 4, 2025)—Canada’s boating industry applauds Budget 2025’s commitment to remove the devastating luxury tax on boats, a failed tax policy that unfairly punished Canadian manufacturers and workers.
