HISWA SYMPOSIUM GOES BACK TO THE FUTURE AT METSTRADE SHOW
Oct 23, 2018
The International HISWA Symposium on Yacht Design and Yacht Construction is a keynote scientific event in the field of yacht design and yacht building. The 50th edition of the symposium will be sponsored and hosted by METSTRADE, the world’s largest B2B leisure marine show, on November 12th – 13th. Its program covers many cutting- edge topics and developments, including the way intuitive new controls are being designed to improve man-machine interfaces.
The organizers will be celebrating this golden jubilee edition of the symposium, which is themed ‘Back to the Future’. Yacht designer Gerard Dijkstra and former associate professor at the Delft University of Technology Lex Keuning, will kick things off with a retrospective of 50 years of innovation in yacht design and building.
There will also be presentations on improving man-machine interfaces (the systems which help interaction between boat and crew), more efficient use of fuel through energy recovery, and the use of batteries onboard. The results of a study on the optimization of the routing for the Volvo Ocean Race will be presented and symposium participants will hear the very latest news on the use of ultra-thin glass, the augmentation of design freedom with the aid of software, and a method to assess people’s sensitivity to vessel movements.
“This symposium will be a fascinating event for all professionals in the sector,” says Michaël Steenhoff, department manager for yacht building at the HISWA Association. “In just a day and a half, they will be brought up to speed on the most important developments in their field. Students are also very welcome: this year we have made room in the program for them to come into contact with key maritime players such as Feadship, Oceanco, Heesen Yachts, Marin and the Delft University of Technology. This recognizes the crucial importance of young people if we are to continue building beautiful yachts in the future.”
