The Hydrobike, a key concept that embodies a vision for the future

Hydrobike Concept

Mar 26, 2024

DECATHLON, determined to erase the boundary between land and water, introduces its latest forward-thinking concept: the HydroBike. This innovation from the French sports giant aims to democratize access to nature while staying ahead in the transformation of their business model.

The initial assessment: paddle sports are often inaccessible to less experienced individuals, assuming the acquisition of paddling skills.

The brand’s design teams have decided to create a new inclusive nautical experience through pedaling, an activity familiar to all. The goal is to expand the space for practice and exploration, ensuring safety while marveling.

The HydroBike, a new pedal-powered watercraft of optimal efficiency.

            • Its broad platform allows for a variety of activities, from play for the youngest to camping or fishing.

            • Modularity and safety are ensured through complete functionalization, from the seat to the pedals to the steering and storage systems.

            • Inflatable floats guarantee light weight, easy repairability, and convenient storage, while the rotomolded platform ensures recyclability and local industrialization.

DECATHLON partnered with OUTERCRAFT, a product strategy agency, to bring this new concept to life.

Through workshop sessions involving the design teams of both companies, this strategic alliance allowed the brand to conceptualize and materialize its vision in record time.

The combination of OUTERCRAFT’s skills in strategy, industrial design, and prototyping with DECATHLON’s expertise in nautical sports and innovation forms a highly potential team that has already proven itself with other products such as the Electric Foil or the Surfboard 100 range, a best seller in the surf market.

The HydroBike project is a proof of concept for the functionality economy. The goal is to offer an experience without requiring a purchase, thus promoting price accessibility without compromising quality.

Designed for rental, the Hydrobike is a value catalyst for rental ecosystems. This economic model directly influences the product design, which must meet the constraints of both the user and the professional: attractiveness, durability, repairability, and optimal storage.

DECATHLON and OUTERCRAFT thus aim to set an example to encourage a transformation in the sports industry.

The HydroBike is more than a concept; it is a vision for the future of nautical mobility and the sports economy.

DECATHLON and OUTERCRAFT seek to inspire other market players by sharing their research work to engage the entire market in positive evolution.

This project is also a key tool for the brand, guiding the evolution of its current product ranges in terms of eco-design and environmental impact.
