The family announces with profound sadness, the passing of Allan John Donaldson, affectionately known as “Al, Pops, Big Al, or Mr. D”, on March 19, 2025, at the age of 83. Al passed away peacefully at Southlake Residential Care Village in Newmarket, marking a poignant end to a remarkable life; he died just hours after his last grandchild played their final competitive hockey game, closing a cherished chapter of unwavering support for his family’s endeavors.

Al is survived by his children: Lee, Mike, and Kim, and their spouses: Chris, Nikki, and Mark. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Ryan, Jessica, Emma, William, Taylor, Matt, Dylan, Shelby, Paige, Holly, Charley, and Jacob, as well as his son-in-law Sean, the devoted husband of his late daughter, Laurie. Al was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 40 years, Patricia “Pat, Annie, Mrs. D”.

Born on June 14, 1941, in Toronto, Al pursued a Chartered Accountant degree through correspondence courses from Queen’s University while working full time and running a household with his wife and 4 children. His professional journey included significant roles such as VP, then later President at Kawneer Aluminum Products and CEO of Canadian Shipbuilding and Engineering. His leadership was instrumental in shaping Canada’s steel and shipping industries, with a notable presidency at the Ontario Marine Operators Association (OMOA), where he championed a $30-million government grant for Ontario marinas. His exceptional career also provided him the honor of meeting dignitaries such as the Queen of England and Prince Charles.

Al’s profound commitment extended beyond his professional life to his personal passions. Known to many as the old guy who braved cold hockey arenas regardless of the time or place. Al was often seen cheering on his grandchildren and sharing their latest accomplishments with whoever would listen. He never missed a sporting event of any of his grandchildren, traveling across continents—from Sweden with Emma, to Boston with Dylan, and to Vancouver for Jessica’s rugby matches. He also attended every dance and musical theatre show, graduation ceremonies or whatever the kids were up to at the time.

Al had a lifelong passion for sailing, taking pride in the sailboats he owned. This passion was a profound part of his identity, bringing joy not only to him but to those who shared in his sailing adventures.

The cottage once shared with his late wife Pat was a haven of hospitality and warmth. Al provided a sense of home not only to his own children but also to their friends, who became ‘honorary’ members of the Donaldson family. Especially during the summers, their cottage was always filled with laughter, love, and the joyous company of at least ten kids every weekend, creating lasting memories for all who visited.

The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) on April 2nd from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on April 3rd, beginning at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception.
