A passenger fell overboard from a B.C. Ferries vessel last Wednesday September 3, and another passenger went overboard the following day on Thursday September 4.

The Wednesday incident occurred on the Spirit of Vancouver Island during the 1pm sailing from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, approximately 2km from shore.

The individual was rescued by the crew in a stable condition with the assistance of another ferry, the Queen of New Westminster, and handed over to paramedics shortly after at the Tsawwassen terminal.

The second incident occurred at 5pm the following day on the Spirit of British Columbia on the same route.

According to B.C. Ferries, the individual was found and retrieved by a rescue boat and then transferred to a Canadian Coast Guard Vessel.

“Having one incident like this is unusual, and two in such a short time frame is rare,” B.C. Ferries spokesperson Sonia Lowe said.

B.C. Ferries says both incidents are under investigation.

Passengers praised the quick responses of the ferry crews in both situations.
